I thought I’d knock up a page that shows what paint I’ve used for various jobs.
These are examples of the different paints I have used in the process of rejuvenating this old classic HQ Statesman.
I’ll start off with the paint used for the Rocker Covers. This colour IS the correct colour for the Rocker Covers, Engine Block, and Sump.
It is VHT High Temperature Engine Enamel, and the colour is called “Chevy Orange-Red”, and the product code is SP119.
I purchased mine through Autobarn, but you can get it at many places.
The paint I used on the Engine Bay Inner Guards and the Air Cleaner is “Wolfchester Laquer Spray – Black Satin”.
My understanding is that GMH used to just use whatever leftover black paint they had at any one point in time, so there was no exactly consistent black that they used.
Having said that, this paint very closely replicates the satin finish that was used. I was very happy with it.
I purchased it on EBay.
This is the paint I used on the rear Brake Drums.
It is VHT High Temperature Caliper Paint – Satin Black – product code SP739.
I purchased this at Autobarn.
I used this to paint the Rear Axle and Diff, the entire underside and chassis, inside the Wheel Arches, and believe it or not, the Radiator and Shroud.
It is White Knight Rust Guard – Satin Black.
I purchased this at Bunnings.
My Radiator Cap started developing rust on top, so I looked at buying a new one. But I found that all the new ones were really flimsy with “tinny” metal. Whereas the one that I had was an older type that was much sturdier. So instead or replacing it, I just sanded away the rust treated it with Rust Converter, and painted it with some of this. It is White Knight Rust Guard – Aluminium. I purchased it at Bunnings, but it doesn’t look like they have that colour anymore, but Australian Boating Supplies does.
I used this paint to restore the Scissor Jack. I first dealt with the rust in the usual ways, then sprayed it with Etch Primer. Then top coated it with Motortech Premium Spray Enamel – Teal Blue – product code MT221. Then affixed a reproduction decal, the details of which will be on my Decals page. I purchased this at Autobarn.
This next one is some paint that I had mixed by Autobarn. I wanted to re-paint the Handbrake Lever because it was all chipped and scratched. If you take a sample to them, they will scan it and match it with their “Intelligent Colour Retrieval & Information Service”.
I didn’t want to take the Handbrake Lever in, so I removed the Glovebox Lid (which is the same colour), and they scanned that.
I have no picture of the Spray Can to show you, because it’s just a generic spray can they use, but here is a photo of the Handbrake Lever (albeit scratched since painted).
I also got Supercheap Auto to mix up some Sunburst Gold Metallic for me. I had a rust spot behind the rear wheel arch at the bottom. So I cut it out and repaired it, rust treated it, used some etch primer as undercoat, and sprayed over the top with the freshly mixed Sunburst Gold. Then top coated it with some Clear Coat. Again no picture because it’s a generic spray can.
